Welcome

Welcome to our project, Feminist Media Throughout History.

Our goal through this research is to understand how depictions of women and feminism in popular or prominent feminist texts develop alternative focuses over the course of the 19th to 21st century.

The Four Waves of Western Feminism

First Wave- c. 1830s-1920s

First-wave feminism was a period of groundwork in the ‘western’ world, marked by women’s advocacy for their own political and philosophical equality.

Second Wave- c. 1960s-1980s

Second-wave feminism broadened the scope of the feminist movement, to include issues such as reproductive rights, sexuality and domestic violence.

Third Wave- c. 1990s-2000s

Third-wave feminisim expanded on previous waves characterized by the rise of intersectionality and the Riot Grrrl Movement.
